The Society for News Design was founded 40 years ago by a group of pioneers looking for support in building respect for design’s role in journalism. You can see it right there in the image that leads this post — the first program for a fledgling annual workshop, which was held right here in Chicago in 1979.
Beyond that leadership and camaraderie, at its core, training was SND’s hallmark.
Whether helping people better understand typography, color, or rapidly emerging technologies and their implications for news, the workshops, short courses and publications helped steer the design revolution. So essential was training to the mission, that within that first year, SND launched its first annual workshop right here in the Windy City.
What was true then remains true today and, so, for our 40th anniversary, we are excited to find ourselves in the heart of Chicago once again.
[email protected]: A Celebration in Chicago
Join us at a special event — [email protected] — from 6-8 p.m. on April 5 and let us know what SND has meant to you. SND President Paige K. Connor will host a few special guests through a short program that is both a celebration of that past and a look at where we are heading.
And, best of all, it’s for a good cause: 100 percent of your $50 entrance donation goes to the SND Foundation, which supports student enrichment through scholarships and the latest in visual journalism training.
Thanks to our generous sponsors — Crain Communications and Hoefler & Co. — you’ll enjoy cocktails and snacks while mingling above the banks of the Chicago River. Paige will also acknowledge a few exceptional volunteers with her President’s Awards and you can even win a signed Milton Glaser poster designed for our 10th anniversary in our raffle.
Follow this link to get your ticket in advance. (Tickets will also be available at the door.)
A Free Registration to the 2020 Workshop?
Want another good reason to attend this SND Foundation fundraiser? How about everyone who attends the reception will be entered in a drawing to receive a free registration to the 2020 SND workshop? SND will announce the winners (one student and one professional) of the drawing at S[email protected]
See you in Chicago!
