40 years ago, the first SND workshop — and now a return to Chicago

SND CHICAGO marks a return to the Windy City 40 years after the initial Society for News Design workshop was organized by SND Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tony Majeri of the Chicago Tribune, the visionary leader who saw how important visual communication was to become in helping people understand the news. The first workshop was just a block away from this year’s gathering: That event, from Sept. 28–30, 1979, was held at the Hyatt Regency and drew 150 people to the nascent field of news design. Check out a list of everywhere SND’s annual workshop has been around the world over the last four decades.
